Alcatraz and San Francisco

Today was one of our best days in America, we went to "The City" AND Alcatraz, we had a great time!

The SoMa or south of market street area. Beautiful and totally renovated.

The ferry building

'San Fransisco Victorians'

'Fairmont Hotel' top of Nob hill

Some pictures of "The City"
A very step street leading down to the bay

California street, cable car tracks

St.Peter and St.Pauls church (under renovation)

View of Alcatraz down the steep street

This is the "original Swensen's"

Lombard, the crookedest street in the world. The views are from top to bottom.

Rainforest Cafe, one of  my favorite restaurants of all time!
A theme restaurant, but still great food!

 The animals actually move!

 this is where we sat

coconut shrimp, served with black beans and rice, with spicy mango sauce

 alcatraz "The Rock"

Golden Gate, on the way to Alcatraz

The bay bridge and "Old Glory"

Pictures of Alcatraz

Outside the cell block

Alcatraz shower room. It has the hottest water, so when the prisoners try to escape by swimming back to San Francisco they would die of shock because they wouldn't be used to cold water.

The cell block

 they are 3 tiers tall

 inside the cells
THE HOLE! this is where you go for punishment.
steel floors, no toilet , no blankets, and another solid door in front to make sure it is completely pitch black!
 The recreation yard "The Yard"

Part of the punishment of the inmates was seeing the view of San Fransisco every day, but not being able to go there. This drove some of the prisoners crazy!

This is where the families used to live in Alcatraz.(Warden's family, Guard's families )

Some more pictures of the cell blocks, Most of them had names made up by the inmates.

the actual dummy heads from the movie "Escape from Alcatraz"
The prisoners went through the hole you see, through the passage way, then up on to the roof.

 The cafeteria

 Entrance to the morgue

very early picture of San Fransisco

We had dungeness crab at "Eagle Cafe" pier 39
Yup, they really are that big!

I love this picture. "Philly" Conran our tour guide. We love her:)

The end of a great day, sunset over the bay

  1. What a wonderful tour of the city. You really captured that special feeling that is San Francisco. Beautiful weather you had, and the pictures of Alcatraz were spectacular. So cool you had lunch at the Rainforest, and dinner at the Eagle cafe. Plus I love the shirts you got mom and I from the Rainforest.

Great report, and it seems just one day left.
